Ashington FC manager Gary Middleton disclosed after Saturday’s thrilling 2-2 draw against Scarborough Athletic in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, that he was proud of his players and told them afterwards that ‘sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.” Middleton said: “Obviously I was disappointed with the final result but proud of the players and the performance they put in over the 90 minutes. I thought we were the better team and at one-nil up, Marc (Walton) has hit the crossbar and if that had gone in, it just changes the course of the game.” He continued: “We knew it was obviously going to be a really difficult contest today and we set up a tactical situation which I thought the lads carried out well. It was even stevens at half time but we got a marvellous start to the second period after a great pass from Richie Slaughter and top finish from Glen Taylor which put us ahead. Then came Marc’s chance – and you wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to have been on the ball in that situation – but it was not to be.” The boss thought the spot kick award against his side was ‘harsh:’ “I thought we needed a cushion as Scarborough were always going to keep coming at us,” he said, “But for the penalty, how can the lad (Shaun Gibson) get out of the way from two yards? I couldn’t fault my side for the way they defended nor could I have asked for anything more than the lads gave. I have just said to them in the dressing room that sometimes you don’t get what you deserve in football – and that’s precisely what happened today because we deserved to win.”
