Middleton: “Mistakes cost us”

Ashington FC manager Gary Middleton was left bemused and puzzled as his side went down to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of title chasers Jarrow Roofing at Boldon on Saturday. Middleton believed the performance from his side was generally good – with the exception of three mistakes which proved costly: “First half we were good value for 0-0 against the wind and if anything we could have been ahead,” he said, “In the opening 15 minutes there were a couple of defensive frailties but that was as we were building our way into the game. We then created a couple of good opportunities after Andrew Johnson got to the by line but things didn’t quite happen for us or did we get the run of the ball.” He continued: “With the strong breeze on our backs for the second half, we told the lads to continue playing as they had. In midfield we played a different shape and got so much joy getting in behind Jarrow from the link up play involving Johnson, Kyle Downey, Glen Taylor and James Taylor. But we have got to learn how to manage games and that goes back to the opening match of the campaign when after leading 2-0 against Jarrow at home, we conceded twice and ended up with a point.” Middleton went on: “I don’t know how we have lost the game – I find it hard to believe. It was a good performance but three mistakes have cost us three goals. We have played well today against a team in the top four and I’m baffled as to how we haven’t taken the full three points because our performance deserved it. We need a bit of luck and rub of the green as we are not getting either at the moment and are getting punished for every mistake.” The boss has also been frustrated by attempts to bring in new players: “For weeks, I have been trying to strengthen and improve the personnel in the squad but without any joy,” he said, “For whatever reason, the search is proving to be very difficult – but it will continue nonetheless.”
